Avon Viaduct

This is the Avon Viaduct, built for the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway Company between 1839 and 1841

Its twenty-six impressive arches, some up to 90 feet high, straddle the boundary between West Lothian and Falkirk, carrying the main Edinburgh to Glasgow railway over the River Avon and the B825. It was designed by John Miller (1805-83), of Edinburgh engineering firm Grainger and Miller, who were contracted as engineers on the new line.

It opened on 18th February 1842 and has been in constant use ever since. It has been A-listed since 1971.
