The castle has a rich history and has changed hands multiple times. It played a role in the Wars of Montrose in the 17th century and was eventually abandoned. In the early 20th century, it was restored by Lt. Col. D. R. Stewart Allward.

It has gained popularity through its appearances in various films and television series. It notably appeared in the final scene of the film "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."
