TweetThe windmill dates from 1771, when Sir John Anstruther established the Newark Coal and Salt Company at St Monans, on the East Neuk of Fife, Scotland, with his business partner, Robert Fall. It was built to provide power to pump seawater into salt pans on the raised beach below. The water was evaporated using coal fires to produce salt.
